Intense heat, subtle dehydration, disrupted eating patterns, strong sun exposure: summer alters several blood biomarkers. Should you therefore postpone your annual check-up to autumn? For most tests, no — provided you follow a few simple rules. For others, timing makes a real difference.
You had scheduled your annual blood test and a heatwave sets in. Should you keep the appointment or wait until autumn? The question is rarely raised in consultation, even though it has a real impact on certain results. Here's what you need to know.
Can heat really skew a blood test?
Heat itself does not alter your biomarkers. What changes them are the physiological phenomena associated with a hot summer: dehydration, even moderate, heavy sweating, dietary changes, prolonged sun exposure, and sometimes a different level of physical activity.
Subtle dehydration, for example, concentrates the blood. Several parameters "rise" mechanically: haematocrit, haemoglobin, urea, sometimes creatinine, sodium. These are not "real" signs of an abnormality; it's simply that your blood cells and certain molecules appear more concentrated in a reduced blood volume. Well rehydrated, the panel returns to normal.
Pre-analytical conditions — that is, everything that happens between the blood draw and the analysis at the laboratory — can also be affected by heat, particularly during sample transport. French laboratories, however, have regulated procedures that largely limit this risk.

Three biomarkers particularly sensitive to the season
1. Vitamin D
This is probably the most striking example. Vitamin D is synthesised by the skin under the effect of the sun. In France, serum 25-OH vitamin D levels reach their natural peak between June and September, and their low point between February and April. Measuring your vitamin D in the middle of summer therefore gives a favourable snapshot that does not reflect your average status over the year. If you want to assess a chronic deficiency, it's better to test at the end of winter.
A useful reminder: since 2014, vitamin D testing is only reimbursed in the presence of specific clinical indications (suspected osteomalacia, repeated falls, bariatric surgery, etc.). Outside these, testing remains possible but at your own expense.
2. Markers influenced by dehydration
Haematocrit, haemoglobin, urea, creatinine, sodium and uric acid are the most sensitive to your hydration status. Poor hydration the day before and the morning of the blood draw can be enough to alter these values, sometimes appreciably. It's rarely dramatic, but it can shift a result from the "normal" range to "abnormal" — or vice versa.
3. The lipid panel
The "holiday" effect is real: richer food, more frequent apéritifs, sometimes alcohol, sometimes less physical activity. A lipid panel done in the middle of the holidays does not reflect your usual diet over the year. Cholesterol and especially triglycerides can be affected. Conversely, a panel done after two weeks of a Mediterranean diet and daily walking can give overly optimistic results.

How to optimise your summer blood test
Rather than systematically postponing your panel, here are five simple rules to make it reliable, whatever the season.
- Hydrate well in the 24 hours before the blood draw: 1.5 to 2 litres of water a day. Avoid arriving fasting and dehydrated at the same time.
- Avoid intense physical activity in the 48 hours beforehand. Exertion raises CPK, transaminases and can disrupt other markers.
- Keep a diet representative of your everyday habits in the week before. No sudden fasting, and no prolonged apéritifs either.
- Choose an early-morning slot and a laboratory close to home. Early in the morning, the heat hasn't set in. A nearby laboratory limits sample transport time.
- If your goal is to assess a chronic vitamin D status, favour the February–April period rather than June–September.
